  • Burnout and tips to tackle it

Burnout is negative changes in thoughts, emotions, and behavior because of prolonged stress or frustration, leading to feelings of exhaustion.

Though it is often spoken about only in the context of work, it can also be experienced due to stressors from personal life (academics, parenting, caregiving, relationships, etc). It can look like a sense of dread, frequent feelings of cynicism, anger, irritability, lethargy or a desire to quit. Some tips would be:

    • Avoid taking on new tasks / responsibilities
    • Try to prioritize amongst existing responsibilities, and try to reduce any if possible
    • Try to seek help from others to outsource/share your existing responsibilities
    • Break down your tasks to subtasks and try to achieve one sub-task after another (set small goals)
    • Avoid multitasking
    • Try to recollect your original motivators behind the responsibilities
    • Seek emotional support from near and dear ones, peers, community
    • Schedule breaks, allow for adequate downtime / rest
    • Practice self-care (hobbies, creating a daily routine, yoga, exercise, practicing self-compassion, etc.)
    • Try to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Set goals for the amount of time you wish to dedicate to different aspects of your life
